No local church is designed to stand as an isolated island. While every local church is autonomous, history and Scripture remind us that we accomplish far more when we link arms. As pastor
Matt Henslee notes on Southern Baptist cooperation, "cooperation necessitates participation"—we are quite simply better together.
For many churches, the local Baptist association has historically felt like little more than a directory for
pulpit supply or a calendar of fellowship meals. Yet, when associations pivot from running top-down denominational programs to actively resourcing the local church, they become indispensable
partners in the Great Commission.
This vital distinction lies at the heart of the San Felipe Baptist Association (SFBA). SFBA operates on a clear, foundational mission:
to serve, support, and resource the gospel impact of the local church. The association does not exist to be served by churches; rather, it exists to strengthen churches so they can fulfill their unique, God-given callings.
When local congregations actively participate in the association, SFBA’s three-fold vision comes into sharp focus:
-
Reach the Lost: One church funding a community outreach initiative, food bank, or church plant can quickly exhaust its budget. By pooling financial and volunteer resources across dozens of local congregations, SFBA enables churches to execute regional evangelistic efforts that make a massive, visible dent in local lostness.
-
Raise the Next Generation of Church Leaders: Ministry can be remarkably lonely, especially for young or solo pastors. Through intentional leadership equipping, peer mentorship, and shared training, SFBA creates a network where seasoned leaders pour into the next generation, ensuring church leaders remain grounded and supported.
-
Revitalize the Church: Rather than letting struggling congregations decline in isolation, associational cooperation provides targeted help—offering consultation, leadership support, and revitalization resources to bring renewed health and vibrancy back to the local church.
True cooperation is never automatic; it requires intentional presence and shared effort. By stepping beyond the four walls of your sanctuary and linking arms with SFBA, your church helps build a resilient, collaborative network where every congregation is equipped to thrive and make an enduring Kingdom impact.
