A Quarter-Century of GraceCelebrating Our Nation’s 250th and Our Ultimate Freedom in Christ This July 4th is no ordinary Independence Day. America is turning 250! Two and a half centuries ago, a group of courageous leaders signed the Declaration of Independence, setting into motion an experiment in liberty that has stood the test of time. As we look back on 250 years of history, we have so much to be grateful for. We are incredibly blessed to live in a nation where we enjoy unprecedented security, prosperity, and—most importantly—the freedom to worship. But as we fire up the grills, watch the fireworks, and gather with our church families this weekend, let’s pause to anchor our hearts in the one who truly makes us free: Jesus Christ. Thankful for the Heritage of LibertyAs the great evangelist Billy Graham once reminded us, our independence did not come easily, nor has our journey been without controversy. Yet, the foundations laid by our forefathers have endured. He noted:
For 250 years, the Church in America has been uniquely blessed. This July 4th, our congregations have a beautiful opportunity to celebrate the fact that we can gather, lift our voices in praise, and boldly proclaim the gospel without fear of government intervention or persecution. That is a gift we must never take for granted. The Greater Freedom: Set Free by ChristWhile we wave the red, white, and blue, we recognize that historic milestones and earthly freedoms can only take us so far. As Christians, we have an even greater cause for celebration. Through Jesus Christ, we have been set free from the ultimate bondage—the heavy chains of sin and death. Political freedom can protect our earthly bodies, but Christ's freedom saves our eternal souls. While it is culturally fitting and wonderful for our churches to acknowledge this landmark 250th birthday, let us make every effort to ensure that Christ remains the center of our worship this Sunday and every Sunday. The highest praise in our sanctuaries belongs to the King of Kings. Our True Home and AlignmentJuly 4th is a day of vibrant celebration and profound thankfulness, but it is also a day to align our perspective with eternity. The Apostle Paul gently reminds us where our ultimate loyalty lies:
While we love our country and pray for its flourishing, our true citizenship is in heaven. Our ultimate allegiance and unwavering loyalty belong to the Kingdom of God and the Savior who rules for all eternity. Remembering the Global Body of ChristAs we celebrate our abundance of liberty, let us open our hearts to the rest of the world. Let this 250th milestone be a reminder to pray for:
Happy 250th Birthday, America!Let us look with gratitude to the past, and look in faith to the future, committing our lives and our nation to God’s perfect will. May our churches shine brightly this weekend, celebrating the wonderful country we call home, while bowing our knees to the Lord who sets us free indeed. Have a safe, happy, and Christ-centered 4th of July! |
