The Power of the Pulpit Break

As the summer sun begins to warm our communities, there is a natural rhythm of slowing down that invites us to reflect. For our pastors, who labor faithfully week after week, this season presents a unique opportunity—not just for a vacation, but for a strategic investment in the health of the church and the training of the next generation.

Why the "Summer Break" is a Wise Investment

It might feel counterintuitive to step away from the pulpit, but taking intentional time away is deeply beneficial for your soul and your sanctuary. Jared Wilson, in his insightful article for Lifeway Research, notes that nearly 38% of pastors considered quitting in 2021. He argues that what many pastors need isn’t a new vocation, but a substantive break—a chance to "unplug from the needs of ministry and refocus on one’s neediness before God."

Stepping back offers several vital benefits:

  • Personal Renewal: It provides space to dream and plan for the fall without the relentless pressure of "Sunday is coming."

  • Fresh Perspective: After years of service, any of us can fall into predictable rhythms. A break allows you to sharpen your craft and return with fresh stories and illustrations.

  • Effective Leadership: Sometimes we inadvertently preach from a place of fatigue. Stepping away ensures you aren't relying on "insider jargon" or preaching from your own strength.

Equipping the Next Generation

Perhaps the most beautiful part of a preaching break is how it fulfills our vision of equipping the next generation of church leaders. When a lead pastor steps aside for a few weeks, it creates a vital platform for others to grow.

This is your chance to "call out the called." Remember the person who first invested in you and helped you exegete your first scripture? You have the opportunity to be that person for someone else. By inviting a staff member or a young preacher to fill the pulpit, you are mentoring them in real-time. When a rising leader "hits a home run," the whole church wins!

A Call to the Congregation

To our church bodies: you play a massive role as encouragers. When a young pastor or a guest speaker stands in the pulpit, your warmth and grace help them find their voice. By supporting your pastor in taking a sabbatical or a short preaching break, you are obeying the biblical mandate to honor your leaders (1 Timothy 5:17) and ensuring their long-term resilience.

Let’s take a risk this summer. If you are a pastor looking to switch pulpits or a church ready to host a rising leader, please reach out! We have a list of men exploring their calling who would benefit immensely from your guidance.

Pastor, we want you to preach as long and as skillfully as possible. Taking a breath this summer is the best way to ensure you do exactly that.
